What the UTM Builder does
A UTM builder adds tracking parameters such as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to a link, so Google Analytics 4 can tell which campaign brought each visitor. This one adds presets with the right dynamic values for Meta, Google Ads, LinkedIn and TikTok, keeps your naming consistent, previews the GA4 channel each link will land in, and builds hundreds of links at once from a spreadsheet. It runs in your browser and needs no sign-up.
- Input: the page you want to send people to, plus source, medium and campaign. Or a CSV with many rows.
- Output: a tracking link, the parameters on their own for ad platforms, a Google Ads tracking template, a QR code, or a CSV of links.
- Rules: lowercase and consistent separators by default. Ad-platform macros are kept exactly as typed.
- Privacy: links are built on your device, and history is stored in your browser only.
The UTM parameters, explained
| Parameter | What it tells GA4 | Examples |
|---|---|---|
utm_source | Where the visit came from | google, newsletter, linkedin, facebook |
utm_medium | The type of traffic | cpc, email, social, paid_social, referral |
utm_campaign | Which campaign it belongs to | spring_sale, 2026-10-product-update |
utm_term | The keyword or audience | running_shoes |
utm_content | Which ad, link or version | header_button, carousel_v2 |
utm_id | A campaign ID, used for data imports | abc_123 |
GA4 also reads utm_source_platform, utm_creative_format and utm_marketing_tactic. You will find them under More GA4 fields.
How to use the UTM builder, step by step
- Pick a preset for your channel, or choose Custom.
- Paste the address of the page you want to send people to.
- Fill in source, medium and campaign name. The naming rules lowercase everything and replace spaces for you.
- Check the GA4 channel preview. If it says Unassigned, switch to a standard medium such as email, social or cpc.
- Copy the full link, the parameters on their own (for Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn), or the Google Ads tracking template. Links you copy are saved in History on this device.
Presets for ad platforms
| Platform | Source and medium | Dynamic values | Where to paste |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Ads | facebook, paid_social | {{campaign.name}}, {{adset.name}}, {{ad.name}} | Ads Manager, ad level, Tracking, URL parameters |
| Google Ads | google, cpc | {campaignid}, {keyword}, {creative} | Tracking template in campaign or account settings |
| LinkedIn Ads | linkedin, paid_social | {{CAMPAIGN_NAME}}, {{CREATIVE_ID}}, {{CAMPAIGN_ID}} | Campaign Manager, the campaign’s tracking parameters |
| TikTok Ads | tiktok, paid_social | __CAMPAIGN_NAME__, __AID_NAME__, __CID_NAME__ | Ad level, URL parameters |
| newsletter, email | None | The links in your email | |
| Organic social | the network, social | None | Your post or profile link |
| QR code or print | flyer, qr | None | The printed QR code. GA4 shows it as Unassigned unless you add a custom channel group |
Naming rules that keep GA4 reports clean
- Use lowercase. GA4 treats “Facebook” and “facebook” as two different sources and splits your numbers.
- Pick one separator, underscores or hyphens, and never use spaces.
- Use the standard mediums GA4 recognises, such as cpc, email, social, referral, display and affiliate, so traffic lands in the right channel.
- Never put UTMs on links between pages of your own site. They start a new session and overwrite the visitor’s real source.
- Keep a shared list of approved sources and campaign names. The History tab and its CSV export help.
How to check a UTM link is working
Open the finished link in a new browser window and confirm the parameters are still in the address bar after any redirect. Then look in GA4 under Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, where Google’s guide to campaign URLs says session source, medium and campaign are reported. If your reports show (not set), the same guide recommends adding utm_id and utm_source_platform to your links. Both are in the UTM builder under More GA4 fields.
Bulk UTM builder
Open Bulk builder, paste rows from Excel or Google Sheets or upload a CSV, and click Build links. Columns can be in any order if you include a header row with names such as url, source, medium and campaign. Download the template to get started. Rows with problems are listed with the reason, and you can download every result as a CSV.
Frequently asked questions
What is a UTM builder?
A UTM builder is a tool that adds UTM tracking parameters to a web address so analytics tools such as Google Analytics 4 can credit each visit to a source, medium and campaign.
Which UTM parameters are required?
Google advises always using utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, so add all three to every link. utm_term and utm_content are optional extras.
Do I need UTMs for Google Ads?
Usually not. With auto-tagging switched on, GA4 gets campaign data from the gclid. Add UTMs only if auto-tagging is off or you also use another analytics tool, and use the tracking template output.
Why does my traffic show as Unassigned in GA4?
GA4 could not match the source and medium to one of its default channels. Standard mediums such as email, social, cpc and referral fix most cases. The channel preview shows what GA4 will most likely do before you share a link.
Should UTM values be lowercase?
Yes. UTM values are case-sensitive in GA4, so Email and email are reported separately. This UTM builder lowercases everything by default.
Can I use UTMs on internal links?
No. A UTM link inside your own site starts a new session and replaces the visitor’s real source. Use them only on links that point to your site from somewhere else.
Is this UTM builder free and private?
Yes, it is free with no sign-up. History is kept only in your browser so you can find past links, and nothing is sent to GradientCo. Clearing your browser data removes it.
