Everyone seems to be a feminist these days. And it’s all very endearing to see. Women supporting women. Men supporting women. But when are we going to talk about the hypocrisy men face in society?
There are certain things every man hears from the moment he opens his eyes in this world and it’s just not okay.
“Be A Man”
What do we really mean when we say this? What does being a man really mean? We have reduced men to unfeeling, unemotional creatures. Hence, we have robbed men of the liberty of expressing themselves. They think it’s ‘unmanly’ to do so. We want men to toughen up, disregard their feelings, and face the music in any and all circumstances and it is absolutely unfair.
“Men Don’t Cry”
You can hear mothers saying this to their sons all the time. When little boys scrape their knees and come running to their parents, they hear them say ‘You’re a strong boy. And boys don’t cry’. Boys don’t cry. We condition them to think their pain is insignificant. Their pain is not worth being acknowledged. And so, at some point in life, they start to believe it and they start to associate weakness with expressing pain. Therefore, this has driven men to hold things in and brought an increase in mental health issues which they, again, do not prefer to acknowledge.
“It’s Your Responsibility”
Why do men have to be responsible for everything? Old traditions required women to stay home and run the house, take care of the children. However, times have changed. Women are all for equality. They want to help run the house for real. Thus, men deserve support. They need to know everything that does not solely depend on them. They deserve that much. So, if something goes wrong, let them know it’s okay. Help them deal with the issue… with all their issues.
What Men Really Deserve
Let the men in your life – your brothers, your father, your husband, your friends – know that it is okay to not be okay. It is okay to feel, okay to share, and okay to cry once in a while. And there is nothing wrong with feeling weak. There is nothing wrong with feeling, period. Their feelings are as valid as every other human being’s feelings. So, they deserve to be heard.
